Welcome to the website of the Division of History of Science and Technology (DHST) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST).
We are an international scholarly community committed to fostering connections among historians of science and technology across regions, languages, institutions, and intellectual traditions. Through IUHPST, we participate in wider networks of international scholarly cooperation, including the International Science Council (ISC), the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH), and ultimately UNESCO.
Our history reaches back to the aftermath of the Second World War, when scholars across the globe sought to build institutions capable of sustaining intellectual exchange across national and political divisions. Those institutions were shaped by a belief in the value of international cooperation, in the circulation of knowledge across borders, and in the idea that no scholarly community develops in isolation from others.
Today, we remain strongly committed to those ideals, while also seeking to rethink what they mean under contemporary conditions, including for those who were for a long time excluded from their promise. Internationalism has never been a finished project. It has always carried both possibilities and limitations, and part of our task today is to examine that history critically while imagining forms of scholarly cooperation that are more open, equitable, and genuinely global.
The DHST exists not simply to represent a field, but to help create the conditions in which that field can flourish across different parts of the world. We hope to support exchange, encourage collaboration, strengthen scholarly communities, and make space for new voices and initiatives.
